Getting to Labuan Bajo: Flights, Airport Transfers and the Boarding Morning

Short answer. Fly into Komodo Airport (LBJ): roughly one hour from Bali, about two and a half hours non-stop from Jakarta. Arrive the night before rather than the same morning — Catnazse pick-up is at 09:00 from your hotel or the airport, within mainland Labuan Bajo near the harbour.

Labuan Bajo is easier to reach than its reputation suggests. It is also the point where more Komodo trips go wrong than anywhere else, and always for the same reason: someone booked a connection with no margin in it.

Which flights actually work?

FromFlight timeNotes
Bali / Denpasar (DPS)About 1h – 1h10 non-stopThe standard route; multiple daily services
Jakarta (CGK)About 2h30 non-stopFewer services; useful if arriving via Jakarta
InternationalVia DPS or CGKNo direct international service to LBJ

Morning departures from Bali are the ones to want. They are the most reliable, and if something is cancelled you still have the rest of the day to be rebooked. An afternoon flight that goes wrong leaves you overnighting in Denpasar and missing a 09:00 pick-up.

Why the night before beats the same morning

The pick-up is at 09:00. To make that on the same day you would need to land in Labuan Bajo by around 08:00, which means a very early Bali departure, which means an even earlier start, which means one mechanical delay ends the trip you paid four figures for.

A night in Labuan Bajo costs a hotel room and removes the entire failure mode. It also means you board rested rather than having been awake since 04:00, which matters because day one runs straight through to a sunset anchorage at Kalong and day two starts with a hill at 06:00. The trip that starts that morning has the full opening-day sequence.

What the transfer covers — and what it does not

Included: pick-up and drop-off between your hotel or the airport and the meeting point, within the mainland Labuan Bajo area near the harbour.

Not included: accommodation anywhere, flights, and pick-up from properties outside that covered area — including hotels and resorts on the surrounding islands. If your hotel is a boat ride from town, tell the booking desk before you arrive rather than on the morning.

The boarding morning, step by step

09:00 pick-up. A short transfer to the harbour. Boarding, a welcome, cabin allocation and the safety briefing. By 10:00 the boat is under way toward Kelor Island, arriving around 11:00, with the first trekking and photo stop at midday and lunch as you leave for Manjarite at 13:00. It is a fast start, deliberately — day one is designed to get you into the water within a couple of hours of stepping aboard.

Bring your passport, your booking confirmation, and cash. Card acceptance in Labuan Bajo is patchy and there is none at sea. The full packing list covers what else earns its place in a small bag.

Where to stay the night before

Stay on the mainland, near the harbour. That is not a preference, it is what the included transfer covers — pick-up from hotels in mainland Labuan Bajo near the harbour, not from island resorts.

Labuan Bajo has grown fast and the accommodation spread now runs from simple guesthouses in town to hillside properties above the bay. Anything within a short drive of the harbour works. The island resorts are lovely and entirely the wrong choice for the night before a 09:00 boarding, because you would need a boat transfer to get to your boat transfer.

Two practical notes. Ask your hotel to hold your main suitcase while you sail — almost all of them do it as a matter of course, and it saves wrestling a hard case into a cabin. And withdraw cash in town before you board: crew gratuities, drinks ashore and anything you buy on the return day are far easier with rupiah in hand than with a card that has nowhere to be read.

The return day and your onward flight

The three-day itinerary has sunrise and breakfast on board at 06:00, snorkelling at Sebayur from 08:00, and returns toward Labuan Bajo after an early lunch at around 09:30. That gets most guests ashore around the middle of the day. Build a buffer on top of that before your flight rather than treating the disembarkation time as a guarantee — sea conditions move schedules, and they should.

If you want the longest possible run of good weather, pick your departure date first and then buy flights around it, not the other way round. If you are still choosing between vessels, how the operator compares boats sets out the fleet side by side.

Komodo National Park entrance and activity fees are charged on top of every cruise price quoted on this site. Reported tariffs across 2025 and 2026 run from roughly IDR 150,000 to IDR 350,000 per person per day, with higher weekend and public-holiday tiers, and the structure has been revised more than once — ask the booking desk for a written breakdown covering your exact dates and route before you pay anything.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Labuan Bajo?
Fly into Komodo Airport (LBJ). Bali (Denpasar, DPS) is roughly one hour to one hour ten minutes; Jakarta (CGK) is around two and a half hours non-stop. There is no practical alternative for international visitors.
Should I arrive the day before?
Yes. Boarding pick-up is at 09:00 and a same-morning connection leaves you no margin for a delayed or cancelled flight. A night in Labuan Bajo turns a risk into a non-event.
Where does the Catnazse pick-up happen?
From your hotel or the airport, within the mainland Labuan Bajo area near the harbour. Accommodation on other islands or outside that covered area is not included in the transfer.
How late can I book my flight out?
The three-day itinerary returns to Labuan Bajo late morning on day three. Give yourself a real buffer after that rather than booking the first available departure — sea conditions and disembarkation timing are not to the minute.
How much luggage can I bring on board?
Soft bags are far easier than hard cases on a phinisi. Cabins have storage but no wardrobe space for large rigid suitcases. Most guests leave a main case at their Labuan Bajo hotel and bring a soft bag aboard.
Is the airport far from the harbour?
No. Komodo Airport sits close to the town and the harbour, and the transfer is short — one of the genuine conveniences of Labuan Bajo compared with other Indonesian departure points.
